philosophy and expectations

I love family photography because I can create memories not only for you but also for your children. You can look back and revel in their sweet smallness and years later they can re-experience the unconditional love and attachment that was their childhood.

So, what will happen in a sitting?

I’m going to lay it out for you: anything can happen....tickling, laughing, running, jumping (not much actual sitting). There is usually a heavy dose of silly talk, silly faces and silly situations.

Sometimes everything goes exactly as planned.

But sometimes people are grumpy, sometimes there are runny noses and sometimes we get dirty.

And you know what? That’s totally ok. It’s great, in fact, because this isnt a starched-shirt sort of affair. It’s a show-me-what-you-are-made-of kind of experience. I’m patient and Im persistent. I want to create beautiful images for you that are fun, funny, unexpected, emotional, candid and most importantly real.

I start with small talk. Occasionally it’s silly. I’m interested in you and your time, story time, bath time and in-between time. It helps me make a plan, and it helps us all feel comfortable with each other. I want the kids to feel at ease...without the pressure to perform so I’ll often start by just chatting with them.

I don’t do a lot of bossing around. I like to keep it casual and fun. I won’t ask your kids to smile, or say cheese, or hold still. And the best don’t need to either. I have suggestions but often the natural way that your family falls together is going to be a million times better than the pose I could put you in. If you need a little help I will offer ideas, but I usually point out a place, give a hint and then wait to see what happens.

Sometimes it might seem like I don’t know where I’m headed but I almost always end up just where I wanted to be. There are going to be loads of good pictures and they are going to be the ones you least expected to turn out!
